Year 5/6

Welcome to Year 5/6!

Miss Hayden

Year 5/6 is an exciting and important time for your child. These are the years when pupils begin to take real steps towards independence — becoming more confident, responsible, and ready for the next stage of their learning journey. Children are encouraged to think for themselves, organise their work, and take pride in what they achieve.

Reminders

  • On RED week, our PE days are Monday and Thursday. On BLUE weeks, our PE days are Wednesday and Friday. We are starting Autumn 2 on RED week. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school on these days.
  • Keeping hydrated it really important; please send your child in with a water bottle that they can refill throughout the day.
  • If you need any login sheets or topic/homework leaflets for your child's home learning, please ask myself or contact the office.

Spelling

If you need another paper copy of your child's spellings for the year, please ask.

Spellings are set weekly on Spelling Shed, along with a paper version for homework.

Reading at Home

Reading is one of the most important skills your child will ever learn. It helps children make sense of the world around them, builds their imagination, and supports learning in every subject — not just English.

When children read regularly at home, they:

  • Build confidence — reading little and often helps them become fluent and independent readers.

  • Grow their vocabulary — the more they read, the more words they understand and can use.

  • Improve understanding — reading stories and information texts helps them think deeply and make connections.

  • Develop empathy — stories allow children to see the world through other people’s eyes.

  • Enjoy learning — reading together can be fun, relaxing, and a special time to share.

Your child has a reading book that they have chosen from our class library. This book is within the suitable Lexile Age Range for your child. Once they have finished reading their book, please bring it back to school, along with their reading record, for them to change.

Year 6 PGL

Year 6 had a fantastic time at PGL earlier this year. The children worked on their communication and teamwork skills, as well as tackling their fear of heights and water! The children were incredible; showing independence and resilience at every step. From abseiling to canoeing, archery tag and zip lining, they did it all (and with a smile on their faces!) Well done Year 6!
