Curriculum Aims

At St. Nicholas Catholic Primary School, we aim to foster enjoyment in using technology while developing pupils’ understanding of its capabilities and the opportunities it offers to create, manage, organise, and collaborate. Tinkering with software and programs is an integral part of our approach, helping pupils build confidence when encountering new technology—a vital skill in today’s ever-evolving digital landscape.

Through our computing curriculum, we strive for pupils to become not only digitally competent with a range of transferable skills suitable for the future workplace but also responsible online users.

We have adopted the Kapow scheme of work, which aligns with the National Curriculum and ensures progression and breadth of knowledge across all year groups. This scheme was chosen because it provides access to a variety of digital media and gives children hands-on experience with a wide range of programs.

Computing Curriculum Overview

At St Nicholas Catholic Primary School, we use the Kapow Computing scheme of work to deliver a progressive and engaging curriculum from Reception to Year 6 which includes:

1. Computing Systems and Networks – Understanding how computers and networks work, and learning to use technology safely and responsibly, including online safety.

2. Programming – Developing coding and problem-solving skills through platforms like Scratch and Python, focusing on algorithms and logical thinking.

3. Creating Media – Using software and tools to design, produce, and present digital content, including word processing, multimedia, and interactive projects.

4. Data Handling – Collecting, organising, analysing, and presenting data using spreadsheets and other digital tools, developing skills in interpretation and communication.

5. E-Safety and Responsible Use – Teaching pupils how to protect themselves online and behave responsibly in digital environments.

Progression Across Year Groups:

• Early Years & KS1: Introduction to simple coding, basic digital skills, and understanding technology in everyday life.

• KS2: Building on coding knowledge, developing computational thinking, producing multimedia content, and using technology to support learning across subjects.

• Computing systems and networks: Sketchpad, MS Paint, MS Word, MS Excel, Google Docs, Gmail, MS Outlook, Trinket, devices with internet access.
• Programming: Bee-Bots, building blocks, recording devices, MakeCode, Scratch, BBC micro:bit, devices.
• Data handling: counting apparatus, clipboards, Sketchpad, thermometers, devices, etc.
• Creating media: Google/Microsoft Photos, MS PowerPoint, Sketchpad, stop-motion apps, WeVideo/iMovie, Google Sites.

Online Safety

At St Nicholas, online safety is a top priority. We use Project Evolve to support our curriculum, ensuring that pupils develop the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. Each half-term, children explore a new focus area, helping them build their understanding progressively and apply it in real-life contexts.

Our online safety curriculum covers areas such as protecting personal information, respectful communication, recognising risks online, and understanding how to seek help when needed. By prioritising online safety, we aim to empower pupils to use technology confidently and responsibly, preparing them for both school life and the wider digital world.
