Our Children’s Sacramental Journey

At St Nicholas, we are privileged to accompany our children through some of the most precious moments in their sacramental journey, as they grow in faith, deepen their relationship with Jesus and experience the love and grace of God.

Our children prepare for and celebrate these special moments within the life of our parish, with celebrations taking place at St Nicholas Catholic Church. Families, school and parish journey together, helping our children understand that these are not simply special occasions, but important steps in a lifelong journey of faith and belonging to the Church.

At special points in this journey, we also come together as the wider Parish of Blessed Edmund Sykes, alongside the children and families of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Primary School. Coming together in this way gives our children a wonderful sense of belonging to a Catholic family that extends beyond our own school.

Through prayer, Scripture, worship and reflection, we help our children prepare their hearts to encounter God through the Sacraments and recognise His presence in their everyday lives. Above all, we hope they grow knowing that they are deeply loved by God and called to share that love with others.

First Reconciliation – Year 3

In Year 3, our children prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time, following the Diocese’s Heart Speaks to Heart programme.

Through Heart Speaks to Heart, the children explore the love and mercy of God and develop an understanding of how our choices affect our relationships with God and with one another. Through Scripture, prayer, reflection and classroom activities, they learn about sin, forgiveness, reconciliation and the importance of saying sorry and making amends.

The children are supported to recognise that God never stops loving us and that, when we make mistakes, we can always turn back to Him. They prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a joyful encounter with God’s loving forgiveness and mercy.

The children celebrate their First Reconciliation with the support of their families, teachers and parish priest. This is an important moment in their faith journey, helping them to understand that through God’s forgiveness, we are given the opportunity to heal relationships, make better choices and begin again.

First Holy Communion - Year 4

In Year 4, our children prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time, following the Diocese’s Heart Speaks to Heart programme.

Through Heart Speaks to Heart, the children deepen their understanding of Jesus’ love for us and His real presence in the Eucharist. Through Scripture, prayer, reflection and classroom activities, they explore the Last Supper, Jesus’ teachings and the importance of gathering together as a community to celebrate Mass.

The children learn that the Eucharist is at the heart of our Catholic faith. They explore how, at Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ and how receiving Holy Communion brings us closer to Jesus and to one another as members of God’s family.

The children are supported in preparing for their First Holy Communion with their families, teachers and parish community. This is a joyful and significant milestone in their faith journey, as they receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time and are welcomed more fully into the life of the Church.

First Holy Communion encourages the children to recognise Jesus’ presence in their lives and to live out His message of love, service, kindness and compassion in their relationships with others.

Confirmation - Year 6

As part of our Catholic faith journey, pupils prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation using the Diocese of Leeds’ Confirmation programme, Empowered by the Spirit: The Gift of Confirmation.

Through engaging preparation sessions, pupils explore the meaning of Confirmation and deepen their understanding of the Holy Spirit, the gifts and fruits of the Spirit, prayer and discipleship. They reflect on what it means to grow in faith and to live as active members of the Church.

Pupils are encouraged to deepen their relationship with God, reflect on their own faith journey and consider how they can use the gifts of the Holy Spirit to live out their faith and be witnesses to Christ in their daily lives. This preparation helps them to approach the Sacrament of Confirmation prayerfully and with a deeper understanding of its importance in their faith journey.

Continuing the Journey

Our children’s sacramental journey does not end on the day they receive a Sacrament. At St Nicholas, we continue to nurture and celebrate their growing faith through the everyday Catholic life of our school.

Following First Reconciliation, children continue to explore forgiveness, reconciliation and God’s mercy through prayer, Scripture and their relationships with others. Following First Holy Communion, children continue to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist through our class and whole school Masses at St Nicholas Catholic Church, strengthening their connection with the parish and their understanding of the Mass.

As children grow, they are given increasing opportunities to pray, engage with Scripture, plan and lead worship, serve others and put their faith into action. In this way, the Sacraments are not seen as isolated events, but as important steps in a lifelong journey of faith, as our children continue to grow in their relationship with God and live out His call to love one another.
