Class Blog

Welcome to our class blog! Year 5 marks the move for children from lower to upper Key Stage 2. It is an exciting and challenging year for your children. The essence of this year is to provide them with many opportunities to gain in independence and to seek out and accept greater responsibility.

Here you can take a look at all the fantastic things we have been doing throughout the year. Below, you will also find copies of children's termly topic leaflets, homework menus and spelling lists as well as links to key learning resources for the children to use outside of school.

Mad Science - September 2019

We enjoyed a fantastic visit from the Mad Science team this month. Some of the children in our class were lucky enough to take part in the 12 week after school club where we learnt how to work scientifically whilst exploring a range of different scientific investigation.

National Fitness Day - September 2019

This year, our school took part in the worldwide national fitness day. We spent time in Year 5 understanding what makes up a healthy diet and beneficial exercise before planning our own meal plans and HIIT workouts for  Usain Bolt. We joined Miss Chatt for a work out of our own and completed the daily mile with friends.

We had a fantastic day, thank you to Miss Chatt & Mrs Wallis for all their hard work and organisation!

Bake off Week / Macmillan Coffee Morning

September 2019

For bake-off week this year the Year 5's made chocolate chip muffins, enough to take home and enjoy and to donate to our MacMillan coffee morning. This year we    raised over £400!

Firework Safety Talk - October 2019

In October we were visited by officers from the West Yorkshire Police. We listened carefully, learning about the importance of  being safe and sensible at this time of year.

Diwali - October 2019

After learning about the tradition and culture of the celebration of Diwali, we worked together to create our very own Rangoli patterns. We used dyed rice and bright paints to create intricate patterns that reflected the belief that light will always overcome darkness. There was rice everywhere!

Reading Cafe - November 2019

To mark the opening of our new school lending library, we visited our very own reading cafe! We enjoyed juice and biscuits whilst exploring some of the books on offer and picking out books we'd like to check out on our first visit!

Mindfulness Week - November 2019

Mindfulness week is all about taking time out from our normal routine to reflect on what it means to have a happy and healthy mind and why this is so important. As part of mindfulness week this year, we visited the Leeds Town Hall for a screening of the brand new Aladdin film by the into film festival, took part in judo lessons with an experienced instructor, focused on being kind in our words and actions online as part of anti-bullying day and enjoyed a choice afternoon filled with mindful activities!

St Nicholas Day - December 2019

To celebrate St.Nicholas Day we enjoyed finding out more about the life of our saint and his devotion to helping others. We had fun with our friends, taking part in games and activities before enjoying a Christmas film and party plates in our pyjamas in the afternoon.

Mock General Election - December 2019

With the help of our Christmas elves, we held a mock general election. It was very interesting to learn all about the campaigning parties and look closely at their manifestos before deciding who we wanted to run the country!

Magic Mal - December 2019

We were visited again my Magic Mal in our last week of terms. We were amazed by all of his tricks and even the teachers joined in too!

Dogs Trust - January 2020

In January, we took part in a workshop from the Dogs Trust charity. We learnt all about what it really means to love and care for a dog and why it is so important that we understand what a dog needs.

Holocaust Workshop ; Leo's Journey - January 2020

All of the children in Year 5 took part in a Holocaust workshop day. It was an experience that the children will always remember. They had the opportunity to explore what life would have been like for Leo, a Jewish child living in Nazi Germany, through the use of artifacts and replicas that we could analyse to give us clues and information.

Franciscan Sisters Visit - January 2020

This week, we were visited by the Franciscan sisters who live locally in our parish. They spoke to the whole school in an assembly about their lives, their commitment to god and how they help in our community , just like St. Francis

After the assembly, Years 5 & 6 had the opportunity to ask any questions they had about the sister's lives. They had some fantastic questions and really enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about this way of life.

Cinderella Pantomime - February 2020

In February, the whole school was treated to a fantastic performance of Cinderella! It was so much fun   and even some of the teachers were cast in parts of the show.
